FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is StopLik™?
StopLik is a Lick Deterrent Aid developed to help discourage a pet from licking. StopLik is primarily used on dogs and cats.

How does StopLik work?
StopLik delivers a small electrical stimulus to the animal's tongue or nose when it attempts to lick the StopLik strip which is placed over the bandaged area. The stimulus is similar to a static shock, but less than 1/200th of that strength. Your pet will also experience an undesirable taste as a result of their saliva coming in contact with the device. This will help prevent the pet from continually irritating the wound, allowing the wound to heal.

When is StopLik used?
StopLik can be used to help prevent an animal from licking a surgical site or an open wound, and to deter an animal from tearing out IV's and Seton drains, promoting faster healing. StopLik may also be used to help discourage an animal from the habitual licking that causes Lick Granuloma.

Will the electrical stimulus harm my animal?
No. The electrical stimulus is applied only at the point of contact where the animal's tongue or muzzle touches the conductive ink on the StopLik strip. No electrical current passes through the animal's body and therefore there is no risk to the animal.

How long does the battery last?
The StopLik battery will last 5-7 days depending on environmental conditions. We have seen batteries last up to 21 days where the dog has been kept inside a dry environment.

What if the animal ingests the battery?
StopLik was designed with your pet's safety in mind. The battery is located in a protective retainer ring to help prevent your pet from accidentally removing the battery. By nature, choking in dogs is uncommon. If you suspect your pet may have ingested the battery, please call your veterinarian immediately or call the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222 in the US. In Canada call collect 416-813-5900. If swallowed, follow the veterinarian or Poison Center instructions and monitor pet to ensure the battery passes. Intended for pets only - keep out of reach of children.

What sizes are available?
StopLik is available in two widths, 1.62 inch width for smaller affected areas and 3 inch width for larger wounds. StopLik may be cut to size lengthwise.

Where can I apply StopLik?
StopLik is designed to be applied over a bandage. StopLik may be applied around the animal's extremities and also on its torso. We recommend using a cohesive flex wrap type bandage or breathable medical tape. Make sure StopLik covers the entire bandage. The strips may be placed adjacent to each other to cover larger areas.

Why StopLik?
StopLik is a Lick Deterrent Aid that works. StopLik is a new solution to an old problem that is non-invasive and non-medicinal. StopLik may be used as an alternative to Elizabethan Collars and bitter or hot pepper sprays. Elizabethan Collars can be effective, but are uncomfortable and bothersome to the pet and should be worn only when you are present. Bitter or hot pepper sprays offer only short-term results and vary widely in their effectiveness.

Are there any restrictions on my pet's activities once StopLik is activated?
Since the moisture from your pet's tongue and muzzle is what activates the stimulus, we recommend that you avoid damp or wet conditions while your pet is wearing a StopLik strip. StopLik will not harm the animal if it gets wet. However, moisture may cause the strip to short out and no longer work properly. We recommend keeping the animal out of wet or damp conditions as much as possible. Cover the StopLik strip with a plastic wrap or bag as you would for any bandaged area when your pet is in moist conditions. Monitoring your pet's activities is the best practice.

How well does StopLik work?
Clinical trials have shown StopLik to be successful in the upper 80th percentile of all dogs in deterring them from licking. In additional testing, Stoplik appears to be 100 percent effective on cats.

How well has StopLik been received by pet owners?
StopLik has been well received by pet owners as an aid in the healing of their pets.

How will my pet react to StopLik?
Most dogs and cats tolerate the StopLik strip very well once it is in place and will generally ignore the strip after an initial sniff or lick. In cases of dogs with habitual licking issues, field studies with veterinarians, technicians and pet owners indicate that when using StopLik the dog experiences less stress and anxiety while healing the Lick Granuloma sites.

How long can I use StopLik?
StopLik may be used as long as recommended by your veterinarian. The battery life averages 5 to 7 days, with some lasting up to two weeks. StopLik may be re-applied as necessary. There is no detrimental effect from extended use of the strip.

How do I dispose of my used StopLik?
The materials used in StopLik are environmentally safe. The used product may be discarded by normal means of disposal.
